The Bunkhouse, Jackson's Own
Hostel, is a 5000 sq. ft fairly open basement facility
that contains a ski waxing and locker room, a large lounge
with HBO cable TV, a kitchen with microwave and refrigerator
(no open cooking is allowed), a washer/dryer, men and women's
showers and restrooms (towels, soap and shampoo are provided).
The large sleeping area contains 25 semi-private bunk beds each
with a 3x3x4 locker beside it (NO PRIVATE ROOMS). Each locker
contains your linen (you may bring your own lock or we'll
provide one for a $ 5.00 refundable deposit).
We
have found that the people who stay in the Bunkhouse are very
respectful of other's privacy and property. Everyone
cleans up their own mess.

Al & Carol Parker, Proprietors
'Twas a Night in "The
Bunkhouse"
'Twas a long day bicycling as I
turned south off the
infamous Old West Trail. I was hot and tired, hungry and
lonely. Wow! A ride with a view!

Who's that ahead', I wondered as I gained on
another bicyclist passing along side the National Elk Refuge
on my way south on Highway 26, 89 & 191 into the Western
Summer and Winter Resort Town of Jackson. I wondered how I'd
find a clean, comfortable and affordable place to stay for a
night or two. I caught up with 'Time-Makin' Tim' at the
Jackson Hole Visitors' Center just north of the Perry cross
street and in front of the local after hours waiters'
hang-out, the Log Cabin Saloon.
As our eyes met over the
Lodging Kiosk we both reached for the bright yellow 'Showers
Only' brochure. 'Maybe this would be a start', we both
thought. The most helpful woman at the desk pointed us in the
right direction. "The next street after Mercill Avenue (the
first stop light as you ride into town) is Gill. The office of
The Bunkhouse, Jackson's Own Hostel, is right on that corner
at the Anvil Motel. It's pretty inexpensive to stay in "The
Bunkhouse"", she said, "you might just want to stay instead of
just taking a shower and camping for the night."
So my new found friend and I
rode on down to the corner of Cache and Gill...and there it
was, just like she said, a small 'Hostel' sign above a
stairway into the Bunkhouse tipped us off!
The friendly people at the
Anvil told us we could have a look at the Bunkhouse before we
had our showers just to decide if we'd rather stay. "Or", he
said, "if you purchase the $ 5.00 shower and then decide you'd
like to stay, we'll just apply that amount to your $ 22.00
nightly rent." "OK. We'll have a look first".
So, down the stairs we went,
used the push-button combo that let us into The Bunkhouse, and
started looking around.

First we had a look at the spacious lounge as we entered.
Hmmmm, HBO TV, lots of chairs and couches, it's clean and
quiet, a telephone, oh, and also a storage room...good place
to stash our bikes. I'll bet we could meet up with other
backpackers here.

A couple of more steps and we noticed the kitchen off
to the right. Wow, very clean, I like the 'no smoking' signs,
a microwave and refrigerator will do.

Through the doors into the sleeping area and we found about
25 bunkbeds, each with a spacious 3'x3'x4' locker. Oh,
yea, Joe at the front desk did say that we could get a lock
for a refundable $ 5.00 deposit. Those lockers would easily
store my pack...oh, sheets/blankets, towels and a pillow are
here in the lockers.
Hmmmmm. Not bad.

All right, nice spacious bathrooms, big mirrors and
counters.

OK, looks like "The Bunkhouse" is a match made in Heaven for
the economy traveler.
Well, Time-Makin' Tim and I
decided to stay the night and try out the Bunkhouse. You know
how it is in the mountains and it did look like there was a
storm brewing. Just to let you know there wasn't any
'hanky-panky' going on between us, Time-Makin' Tim stayed in
the "guy" area and I was able to secure a bunk in the "gal"
area. It was a great night in Jackson, we met a lot of people
both in and out of the hostel...and we hear there're so many
outdoor activities in "The J Hole" both during the summer and
winter we plan on returning with more sports gear...
So, the moral of the story
is.....if you're trying to make time on the road, don't waste
any gettin' to The Bunkhouse, Jackson's Own Hostel, a great
stop-over in Jackson Hole.....convenient, clean, comfortable &
inexpensive. I'll look for you there, too!
